There is an opportunity for traditional printing methods to be adapted in contemporary typographic practice and pedagogy. The connections made through this research project are a way to reframe historical typographic process through the critical examination of printing practices. The Printing Types is a study of several master printers and designers who shared knowledge through exemplary teaching, in Britain, during the twentieth century. My study exposes the intersections of design methods through the historical, design pedagogy and practice. This paper presents how my PhD practice research has enabled the development of a range of pedagogical approaches in higher education.

Beck Howson is a design researcher, an educator and a designer/ printer. Typographic work benefits from traditional letterpress techniques combined with experimental approaches. Beck is a member of the Letterpress Workers and enjoys collaborative work that enhances a wonderful typographic adventure.
