Archetype Press, housed under the Hoffmitx Milken Center fot Typography [HMCT], offers the opportunity to ArtCenter students and to the public, to learn and practice setting type and printing by hand. Now the largest educational letterpress facility on the West Coast, it was originally established with more than 2,500 cases of rare American and European foundry type, wood type, and ornaments from the collection of renowned L.A. typographer and printer Vernon Simpson. HMCT Archetype Press continues the tradition of an older—but not outdated—technology, as an experimental typographic workshop.

Gloria Kondrup has been a design educator for over two decades at ArtCenter College of Design. As Director of Archetype Press, ArtCenter’s letterpress studio, she redefines the value of typography and analog technology in the digital landscape. She is currently the Executive Director of the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography [HMCT] at ArtCenter whose mission is to advance and elevate the value of typography. Created to serve as a catalyst for the enhanced study of typography and letterform design, the Center serves as an educational forum, research center, and archive. The HMCT presents workshops, symposia, lectures, exhibitions, and residency programs.

Christina Aumann combines contemporary language with typography and analog letterpress printing technologies. She views the letterforms she works with as miniature sculptures with battle scars from the years they have lived through. These imperfections reveal themselves in the prints, adding a human quality to her artwork.

Aumann received a BA in Studio Arts from University of California, Santa Barbara. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Brewery Project, and Artworks/Bookarts. She is an assistant professor at ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, and recipient of a 2017 Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography Educators Grant.
