ECU’s School of Art & Design has recently taken a new approach to the Foundations/1st Year student curriculum. The new curriculum—titled Shared Experience—is based on the strengths of the school and a shared vision of what a BFA student gains in their four years at ECU. In the presentation, Kayla and Dan will share how we built the new curriculum and how Graphic Design and Letterpress Printing found its way into the mix.

Dan Elliott is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at East Carolina University. He teaches everything from the Freshmen level "Visual Organization" to Senior Capstone courses. Dan believes that letterpress printing can play an important role in Graphic Design education allowing students to have a tangible/physical relationship to the tools and practices easily taken for granted using design software.

Kayla is an educator, applied graphic designer, letterpress printer and (most importantly) type nerd rooted in modernism. She is a process-oriented maker who channels traditional and hands-on techniques to create experiential learning environments. A love for industrial design often brings Kayla’s work into dimensional spaces while her persistent curiosity motivates her to collaborate with a diverse range of industry professionals. Kayla relishes in the sound of Chandler & Price gears cranking, motorcycles shifting and huskies howling.
