Founded in 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland, Globe Poster delivered eye-catching posters to promote concerts, drag races, circuses, carnivals and more. Fluorescent colors, bold wood type, and lettering that shook and shimmied defined Globe’s iconic style, attracting clients from James Brown and Marvin Gaye to Ike and Tina Turner. Globe ceased production in 2010, and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) stepped forward to purchase a substantial portion of Globe, including wood type, letterpress cuts and posters. The acquisition by MICA keeps Globe’s legacy alive as a working press, a teaching tool, and source for research.

Allison Fisher, Globe Manager, will take you on a virtual tour of collection highlights, share ah-ha moments, and discuss projects that keep the presses humming. Carrying Globe forward is not possible without the next generation of letterpress printers, so MICA Printmaking ’20 graduate Lauren Jackson will share her work and insights as a student leader in letterpress. In addition to Lauren’s work as a Globe intern, she was selected as a 2019 Printers Camp participant, was lead printer for a Dolphin Press and Print fine art edition, and her work appeared in the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum’s 2019 New Impressions survey.

Allison is a designer and letterpress printer from Baltimore, Maryland. She fell in love with letterpress while earning her BFA in Graphic Design at MICA. As a student she was bitten by the DayGlo love of Globe and devoted most of her senior year helping to rally student support for acquisition of the collection. Her love of Globe kept her in Baltimore, lurking around MICA’s campus, helping on projects and spreading the word of Globe until MICA finally hired her. Allison manages all things related to Globe from the production of new projects for clients like Hello Kitty and Smithsonian Institutions, wrangling Globe interns, overseeing archiving, working on community-oriented projects and more.
